I have an amazing article in the January issue of Makeup Artist Magazine, an interview with the makeup artist Mary Greenwell. It's a Q&A, so the amazingness is all hers--it's one of the best interviews I've ever done. Greenwell was there at the beginning of the supermodel era, playing dress-up with Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, et al. Here she is, holding forth on red lipstick:
There's a time between the ages of about 34 and 60 when red lipstick is going to age you beyond belief. Before that you look funky, sexy, gorgeous, divine, wonderful, free, independent, individual--then suddenly you look like a hard bitch! Then around the age of 60, you don't care what anyone thinks, you don't care about giving the world your voluptuous, seductive face. Now you're bigger than that, you've gone further; you want to be individualistic and strong and fabulous. At that time, you can start wearing the red lipstick again, with your divine individual clothing, your Vivienne Westwood coat.
The whole interview is like that, trust me. It isn't online yet, so you'll have to hunt down a copy of Makeup Artist Magazine, which is a trade journal for professionals. It's also by professionals, who treat writers brilliantly--I have had a great experience with the stories I've done so far, and love my editor, Heather Wisner. In the twilight days of print media as we know it, that is something that is all too rare and worthy of mention.
